Why Won't My Air Conditioning Come On?

Why Won't My Air Conditioning Come On?

Here are tips to diagnose common heating and air conditioning problems.

Heating and air conditioning problems can reduce most homeowners to tears. No one wants to spend a Carolina summer without air conditioning. Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of problems are simple and affordable to fix.

Here are a few of the most common problems affecting your HVAC equipment:

  • Power issues: Nine times out of 10, if a furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or other heating or cooling device won’t turn on, the power is the culprit. Tripped breakers, bad fuses, and bumped on/off switches constitute a surprising number of service calls. Protect your pocketbook—and your ego—by checking these things before you call.
  • Airflow issues: From dirty filters to clogged intake pipes, restricted airflow can prevent central air units from turning on. Why? Oxygen is needed to start the burners used for turning natural gas into cold air.
  • Clogged condensers: If your AC is running but it’s not cooling your house, there could be a few problems. Some of them you won’t be able to diagnose or fix yourself, but a clogged condenser is easy to manage. Simply go outside to your outdoor AC unit and clear out any debris. Spray it out with the hose to remove any grass, seeds, or other bits that built up over fall and winter. Once free and clear, your home should be able to cool sufficiently.

If these fixes fail, it may be time to call in an HVAC professional. Contact Fogel Services and schedule a heating and air conditioning appointment with a factory-trained, NATE-certified technician today.
