Maintenance agreements take care of most tasks needed for a well-functioning furnace.
Maintenance agreements provide the majority of work your furnace will need throughout the heating season. How much is left over really depends on the type of equipment you own. For the most part, furnace filters are disposable and made of fiberglass and similar materials. These don't require cleaning, but replacing.
Here are a few considerations when it comes to filter options:
- Furnace filters protect your heating equipment. While your filter will impact the indoor air quality found throughout your home, its first job is protecting your furnace from dirt and debris. Higher MERV ratings will remove nearly all contaminants from the air, but they also introduce extra resistance. This stresses your furnace and may lead to extra wear. For this reason, it's often best to choose a filter with a MERV rating between 7 and 13.
- Furnace filters need to be changed on a regular basis. Dirty filters will greatly increase the amount of energy you need to heat your home. Dirty filters increase resistance, meaning it takes more power to push air through your system. Changing filters regularly prevents this resistance, and allows your furnace to operate at high efficiency. The majority of filters need to be changed once every month to every three months. Depending on the brand and type you purchase, filter purchases can really add up. Your local HVAC repair shop may be able to help you locate higher quality filters at affordable rates.
- Reusable filters do exist. If you'd rather avoid the waste of using disposable filters, ask your technician to recommend a reusable brand. These filters do need to be cleaned regularly. The recommended schedule will depend on the size and the manufacturer.
